Texas Tech Red Raiders College Football Preview, Prediction, betting insights.

2025 Texas Tech Prediction Overview
How good must it feel to be a fan of the Red Raiders right now? Basketball team had a nice little run, softball team is going to the natty, and your football program is spending like an SEC team this offseason! It looked like Joey Maguire and co were told they had a blank cheque to go get us a Big 12 title. So, what does that look like? How about going out and getting two of the hottest coordinators on the block and the number 1 portal class in the country? Tech spent huge and will now expect huge results, and for a coach who is 23-16 in his three years at the helm, this will be a pressure-packed season. Leftwich comes over from Texas St to run the offense, and this feels like the perfect fit in Lubbock with his up-tempo air raid concepts. Defensively, Maguire brings in Shiel Wood from Houston. He helped engineer that defense to punch well above its weight and had one of the best secondaries in the country last season. Can you spend your way to instant success? We will indeed find out this season what defines success for this team that spent more than likely the rest of the league combined.
Texas Tech Football Recruiting
Texas Tech had the #1 recruiting class in the conference in '24 they followed that up with the #8 class this year. Maybe Maguire focused his energy on the portal this time around. Let's see if former 5 star Hudson (WR) can live up the billing after his transfer saga this offseason.
Texas Tech Portal
Where to begin? The number 1 or 2 class in the COUNTRY, depending on where you look. This team spent and spent big. Key additions include Hunter (DL), all Big 12 from UCF, Bailey (edge), the highest graded pass rusher coming over from Stanford. Gil-Howard (Northern Illinois DL) Height (GT EDGE) there's the making of a D-line of just transfers! Sampson (UNC OT), Cleaveland (Colorado G), and Zambrano Illinois State) make up the bones of a new offensive line. Carter is a big-time TE coming over from Louisiana. The secondary and WR room is also littered with transfers Virgil (Miami Oh WR) and Pollock (Miss St CB) are names to know. Ultimately, Tech got who they wanted, so anyone who left the building, you imagine they were ok with it. How this all comes together is going to be very interesting.
Texas Tech 2025 Roster Overview
Morton is back under center for Tech; he threw for nearly 3000 yards last season and 25 TDS. He always seems to have an injury concern or two, so keep an eye out. Losing Brooks (RB) to the NFL is a significant loss, and he will be missed. Carter and Sampson return on the line, blended with transfers. Defensively Rodriguez the all Big 12 linebacker is going to lead the group. Communication will be key as the line and secondary (which was awful last season) will be a bunch of new faces as listed above. Through all the additions I do have some questions on this team, who are the major pass catchers? Which RB will step up to shoulder the burden Brooks took on? What about the porous from a year ago secondary? Will the new scheme be the be-all and end-all there?
Statistical Pulse
Tech graded bottom in PFF tackling grade and second bottom in coverage. They were also 6-1 in one score games last season cough cough they went to OT with Abilene Christian. Couple that with being 21st in Bill Connelly's expected turnover margin that seems like a 8-5 team that got a few breaks no doubt.
2025 Schedule
A reason to be optimistic for this group of transfers is that they have a nice runway to get gelling as a team. Though I do sneaky like what Oregon State has done this offseason, I imagine they'll have three wins under the belt before going to Salt Lake City for a huge early matchup with the Utes. At Arizona State and K-State will be tough, and getting BYU in Lubbock rounds out the toughest tests on paper. One last detail is I do not like the look of - 7 weeks on the bounce with no bye, especially late in the year. Don't like the look of that.
Texas Tech Predictions 2025 (Game-by-Game & Record Pick)
Look, I get it, spend the big bucks in a conference like this and you should be beating your chest and expecting a title game appearance at very least. But when I really look into this team, I just can't get there. I think 9-3 is best best-case scenario for this group. We need to see a RB group replace the ALL TIME leading rusher in program history. Hudson become a go to WR after multiple programs (including Tech) walk out the door. A brand new coordinator connect the dots all over the defense. As well as a QB and coach who's (whispers) never really had the kind of success people are hoping for this year. I will admit the D line could be absolutely nasty, but other than that, I don't see Big 12 champion caliber written for the Red Raiders this season.
